The images of paulownia, bamboo, and phoenix in the design represent a statement found in an ancient Chinese book: "This is the nature of the phoenix; it will not rest, except in a Wu-tung tree (which is considered to be auspicious), and it will not eat anything but precious treasure." In our country this has status as the most venerable design. The auspicious phoenix has not been given a place on this padded silk garment, but its presence is hinted at by the paulownia and bamboo.
